What is Car Free Week?

As part of the National Energy Policy Initiative, the Ministry of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure (CPI) is organising a Car Free Week to be held from March 22nd to 26th 2021 with the goal of raising awareness of alternative travel options to aid in the reduction of traffic, conserve energy, reduce harmful emissions and reduce parking problems.

For the month of February the civil service took part in the CIG Responsible Travel Scheme which encouraged civil servants to take the George Town shuttle, carpool or ride a bike and collect points each time to be eligible to win a prize. 36 people from 17 different Government departments took part in the scheme. The program is being extended island wide to create a Car Free Week.

Car Free Week will further compliment the George Town shuttle service by encouraging persons to leave their vehicles at home and still be able to commute around town. The ultimate goal is to create long term car free options for commuting and by participating in car free events, this provides much needed information to establish the long term plan.

We are inviting you to join us and take the pledge to participate in the event. Companies can support employees by allowing them to work from home, provide priority parking for carpoolers, arrange a bus for them to park and ride, encourage them to walk, ride a bike, take public transportation, or any other incentives. All participants can share their involvement via hashtag #carfreeweekcaymanislands. All persons who pledge will be entered into the raffle for a prize. Share the car free week flyer and logo with your team and consider purchasing shirts with the logo to wear during the week.

Think you will be stuck in your office all day? Don’t forget, there is a free George Town Shuttle which loops around town so you can still go out for lunch or to run errands. Download the live tracker app:
